A General Duty Assistant (GDA), also known as a Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Assistant, or Nursing Aide, plays a crucial role in providing basic patient care and support under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or other healthcare professionals. The job description of a General Duty Assistant typically includes the following responsibilities:
Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Providing assistance to patients with tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding.
Vital Signs Monitoring: Taking and recording vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate, and reporting any abnormalities to the nursing staff.
Mobility Assistance: Helping patients with mobility issues to move safely, including transferring them from beds to wheelchairs or assisting with walking.
Positioning and Comfort Measures: Ensuring patients are comfortable by adjusting their positions in bed, providing pillows or cushions, and maintaining proper body alignment to prevent pressure ulcers.
Environmental Care: Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in patient rooms, changing bed linens, tidying up bedside tables, and ensuring a safe and sanitary environment.
Assisting with Medical Procedures: Supporting healthcare professionals during medical procedures such as wound care, catheterization, or specimen collection.
Emotional Support: Providing emotional support and companionship to patients, listening to their concerns, and offering reassurance and encouragement.
Observing and Reporting: Monitoring patients for changes in condition or behavior and promptly reporting any concerns or observations to the nursing staff.
Patient Safety: Adhering to infection control protocols, following proper lifting techniques, and ensuring patient safety at all times.
